A Brief Description of The Handmaid’s Tale

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is a dystopian television series developed by Bruce Miller, based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name.

Hulu ordered a straight-to-series order of 10 episodes for the series in late 2016, and production began in the fall of that year.

Following a Second American Civil War, a theonomic, totalitarian society imposes child-bearing slavery on fertile women known as “Handmaids.”

What is The Handmaid’s Tale Series Based on?

When it comes to feminism, the novel examines the ways in which women in a patriarchal society lose their individuality, their ability to express themselves, and their ability to exercise their reproductive rights.

As in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, this novel is a series of linked stories (such as “The Merchant’s Tale” and the “Parson’s Tale”), and its title echoes these components.

It’s also a nod to the classic fairy tale trope of the main character narrating her own narrative.
