The Beginnings of My Life and Profession
Born RuPaul Andre Charles on November 17, 1960, in San Diego, California, he is better known by his stage name. One of his three sisters. Ernestine “Tony” Charles took him and his siblings home after his parents split up in 1967.
At the age of fifteen, RuPaul followed his sister Renettea to Atlanta, Georgia, to pursue a career in the performing arts. He worked at the prestigious Plaza Theatre throughout the 1980s as a struggling filmmaker and musician. He sang in local bars and clubs including the Celebrity Club and even backed up Glen Meadmore. In 1989, he got his start when the B-52s’ music video for “Love Shack” needed extras to dance in it.
Using the rap label Tommy Boy, RuPaul released the dance/house album “Supermodel of the World” in 1993. The music video for the track “Supermodel (You Better Work)” was a smash on MTV, as was the song itself. On the Billboard Hot 100, it reached position 45, but on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, it reached position two.
Later singles/videos “Back to my Roots” and “A Shade Shady (Now Prance)” also reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. Later albums include “Foxy Lady” (1996), “Ho Ho Ho” (1997), “Red Hot” (2004), “Champion” (2009), “Glamazon” (2011), “Born Naked” (2014), “Realness” (2015), “Slay Belles” (2015), “Butch Queen” (2016), “Remember Me: Essential, Vol. 1” (2017), “American” (2017), and “Essential, Vol. 2” (2017).
After establishing his name in the music industry, RuPaul became the first drag queen to acquire a significant modelling contract with MAC Cosmetics. After that, in 1996, VH1 gave him his own talk show, titled The RuPaul Show.
Celebrities such as Diana Ross, Nirvana, Duran Duran, Pat Benatar, Mary J. Blige, Cyndi Lauper, Olivia Newton-John, and the Backstreet Boys performed or were special guests. Michelle Visage was his co-host, and the two of them also hosted shows on WKTU.
From 1996 through 1998, two seasons of “The RuPaul Show” were broadcast. A podcast named “RuPaul: What’s the Tee w/ Michelle Visage” has been hosted by the two hosts since 2014.
Originally airing on Logo in February 2009, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” marked RuPaul’s comeback to television. The objective of the show is for drag queens to compete in order to be named “America’s next drag superstar” by a panel of judges that includes RuPaul.
One of the judges is Michelle Visage, a frequent partner of RuPaul’s. The show topped the ratings for Logo TV and has been shown around the world on channels in places including the UK, AU, CA, NL, and IS.
The show’s current (as of May 2020) network is VH1, where it has been airing since its ninth season. Popular offshoots of the show include “RuPaul’s Drag U,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK,” and “RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race.”
Even though “Drag Race” is her most famous show, RuPaul has hosted several others. He co-hosted the E! talk show Good Work on plastic surgery with Dr. Terry Dubrow and Sandra Vergara in 2015. There were only 6 episodes of the show.
Then, RuPaul presented the short-lived “Gay for Play Game Show Starring RuPaul” on the Logo cable network from April 2016 until July 2017. In addition, on June 10, 2019, his daytime chat show titled “RuPaul” debuted on some Fox TV stations. Due to poor performance, the network did not pick it up after the three-week test period ended.
With a vast list of acting credits to his name, including “Crooklyn” (1994), “The Brady Bunch Movie” (1995), and “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything!” (2000), RuPaul has proven himself to be a versatile performer.
Hollywood has cast her in several films, including “Julie Newmar” (1995), “But I’m a Cheerleader” (1999), and “Hurricane Bianca” (2016). The “Broad City” (2017) and “Girlboss” (2017) and “Grace and Frankie” (2019) and “AJ and the Queen” (2020) Netflix series are only a few of the television and web series in which he has appeared. Also, he’s hosted “Saturday Night Live” before, a comic sketch show.

Properties Sold By RuPaul
In October of this year (2019), RuPaul dropped $13.7 million on a Beverly Hills mansion with a total floor area of 10,300 square feet. Their last property was a $2.5 million purchase from 2011.
They tried to sell the property for $5 million in 2018, but were unsuccessful. His $350,000 New York City flat has been his home for over 25 years. He dropped $600,000 for a West Hollywood condo back in 2007.
