We’re huge fans of Android, but Apple clearly dominates the smartwatch market. Reviews of the first generation Apple Watch were mixed, while the second and third generations are much more successful.
Although Wear OS and the Galaxy Watch have some fantastic capabilities and certain devices that we really enjoy, Apple’s watches typically have longer battery lives and more sophisticated features than those we’ve seen from Google.
Although it’s not specifically supported, Apple Watches can be paired with Android phones, but with a number of restrictions. Since the Apple Watch pairing app is only available on iOS devices, it is true that you can only sync an Apple Watch with an iPhone.
But here’s the thing: if you have an LTE Apple Watch, you can get around Android with a little bit of tweaking on your phone and your watch. You shouldn’t run out and buy an Apple Watch just for this, but if you’ve switched to Android but can’t seem to get your watch to connect, you could give this a go. Come on, we need to get started.

In this case, we are going to pair your Apple Watch with your iPhone, get everything set up and running, then put your iPhone into aeroplane mode and switch its SIM card to an Android phone.
It’s not a sure thing, but we managed to make it work in the office. Since you’ll be switching between Android and iPhone SIM cards, you’ll need two phones that are unlocked to do so. This is only possible with an unlocked phone or two SIM cards from the same provider.
- Create a connection between your iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Try making a few of test calls to make sure they go through successfully.
- Aeroplane mode disables the iPhone’s cellular connection.
- Toggle Apple Watch off.
- You can use your Android phone by simply switching the SIM card from your iPhone.
- Initiate Apple Watch operation.
- You must hold out until the Apple Watch no longer displays the Disconnected message.
Android Wear vs. the Apple Watch
I experimented with an Apple Watch, an iPhone, and a Samsung Galaxy S7 at work. It took the Apple Watch a long to connect at first, and the signal was weak. The watch connected more quickly and the call quality was considerably better once I took it outside, where the signal was stronger.
If I called someone by their SIM number, rather than their phone number, I could use Siri to make the call. A solid connection allowed for a clear conversation, but I was unable to coax Siri into performing any tasks beyond texting me the day’s forecast.
Constraints and Impasses
After that, you should have no trouble using Siri for the very minimum of tasks and making and receiving calls. As far as I can see, there is no direct connection between the two gadgets. Because of their reliance on the network for communication, they are limited to doing just the most fundamental tasks.

You will be unable to access the Apple Watch’s more sophisticated features. Since the SmartWatch app isn’t available, you’ll be limited to making and receiving phone calls and asking Siri simple inquiries.
You can use voice commands to make calls, but only if you refer to the contact names by the names they appear in your SIM card. Battery life is another potential obstacle. The Apple Watch already doesn’t have a great battery, and if you’re using LTE all the time, it won’t last very long at all.
The only time you’d want to use this hack, in my opinion, is if something happened to your iPhone and you desperately needed to keep using your Apple Watch. If not, the effort is wasted.
Most of the watch’s smart features are inaccessible, and Android offers many smartwatches that are only compatible with other Android devices. Quite a few provide far more options than this exploit would enable.
